My constant inspiration are the forms and structures within the natural world. I work directly from nature, as I do, I am intensely aware of the inter-connectedness of things all around us. All around us, the unceasing cycle of life, birth, growth and regeneration.
Printmaking allowed me to layer my observations and find new compositions that brought to life these connections.
I etched my drawings on large steel plates using intaglio techniques. I printed them on acid free papers using a traditional hand spun etching press using multi-plate method. Some of these plates were printed on blocks of Monotype colour.
It was whilst working at Glasgow Print Studio that I was given the opportunity to take part in an exchange program which resulted in me spending 3 months at J.J School of Art in the centre of Mumbai, India.
In India I found that nature existed in a fragmented way between the cracks and Urban landscape. I was fascinated by the richly coloured world around me which was saturated in the religion and spirituality of the people. In a frantic, fast moving and over-crowded place I began to see glimpses of nature as my sanctuary, my Temple and a place for quietness and contemplation.
These thoughts filtered into the work that followed back in Scotland. Pinecones became Temple forms. Sheep bones the spirit of the place. Great beams of light projecting up between wildflowers.
I am presently working in my studio at home in Selkirk making new work based on the Scottish Borders environment.
