Christine Callum McInally

Biography

My paintings are my expressive voice, recording my ideas about the world around me, like a visual diary. I live in the countryside in the north of Scotland on a peninsula called The Black Isle.

I studied Illustration and Printmaking at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee and since then my work has evolved through studying the work of the old masters, in particular Schiele, Leonardo, Matisse, Picasso and the Scottish Colourists.

Much of my work is rooted in the landscapes of Scotland and Europe. There is a distinct difference in light and atmosphere between north and south and I like the strong contrasts of shape and colour. I paint intuitively, from life, layering thin willow charcoal, washes of acrylic and incorporating collage for texture and drama.

Throughout my life, creating images has been a constant obsession. Teaching art to both adults and children made me realise how powerful and therapeutic any type of artwork can be. It unlocks thoughts and allows freedom of expression.

Many of my paintings are in private collection in the UK and throughout the world. I have exhibited in galleries in Scotland, Switzerland and China.
